Maat
Other names: Mayat

The Egyptian goddess of truth, she took the form of an ostrich feather on the underworld balancing scales, opposite a recently dead person's heart. If the dishes balanced-if the heart of the deceased was light with justice-the judge, Osiris, said, "Let the deceased depart victorious. Let him go wherever he wishes to mingle freely with the gods and spirits of the dead." Alas for the soul if the dishes did not balance, for the heart heavy with evil was instantly eaten by the monstrous goddess Ahemait.

Sometimes divided into two identical goddesses, Maat had no temples but was worshiped in the rhythm of truth, wherever it was perceived.

Her name means true, right, real. She wears the ostrich feather, symbol of natural Law. In the first act of creation, a great Egg formed out of the primeval waters of darkness. From it emerged the boundless spirit of the sun, causing movement and life, forming all beings according to Maat. It was Maat who laid out the course of the sun at creation. "Your right eye is maat and your left eye is maat, your flesh and your limbs are maat... you are because Maat is."

In the end, the heart is weighed against her feather of truth.

The word, Maat translates "that which is straight" and implies anything that is true, ordered, or balanced.

She is the wife of Thoth.

Together with Thoth,
they chart the daily course of the sun god Ra.
She is sometimes called
the 'eye of Ra' or the 'daughter of Ra'.

Maát represents ethical principles embracing
the values of truth, justice, harmony, balance, cosmological order, reciprocity and propriety.

She is usually depicted wearing an ostrich feather on her head,
a symbol of the principles she represents.

She controls the movement of the stars and the seasonal flooding of the Nile River.
For all Egyptians to live in a happy, prosperous and peaceful environment,
they had to live within the order established by Maát.
The pharaoh, as absolute ruler, was the individual most responsible to manifest in life,
through all his actions, the entire concept of Maát.
Deviation from the tenets of Maát could prove disastrous for the pharaoh.

We know she is a very ancient goddess because we find her in the boat of Ra as it rose above the waters of the abyss of Nu on the first day.

Ma'at, goddess of truth & justice, kneels before the great mother goddess Isis.

Ma'at
Maat was the personification of the fundamental order of the universe, without which all of creation would perish. The primary duty of the pharaoh was to uphold this order by maintaining the law and administering justice. To reflect this, many pharaohs took the title "Beloved of Maat," emphasizing their focus on justice and truth. At any event in which something would be judged, Maat was said to be present, and her name would be invoked so that the judge involved would rule correctly and impartially. Maat's presence in all worlds was universal, and all the gods deferred to her.

Egyptians believed that to be worthy of life after death, a person had to live a just, honest life on earth, and that judgement was made on the deceased by Maat. If the heart of the deceased was lighter than her feather, then the person could live with the gods. If the heart was heavier than her feather, then the evil one would be fed to a ravenous monster.
